Sapphire exists in different colors

Sapphire is a natural crystal of the Corundum family, composed of alumina colored by cobalt traces

It is very hard, transparent and blue. The sumptuous color of sapphire is due to titanium and iron.
Depending on the origin of each gem, the blue varies. The Ceylon sapphire has a rich range, the Birman sapphire is of an intense ultramarine cast, and Cashmere Sapphire is extremely rare.

Star sapphire
Corundum

Corundum is a very hard gem, composed of crystallized alumina colored by various metallic oxides.
Surprisingly, both ruby and sapphire are in the Corundum family, even though they appear to be so different.
Corundums of other colors are also called sapphire, e.g. yellow-sapphire and pink-sapphire.
