The name 'ruby' comes from the Medieval Latin rubinus, and rubeus, which mean "red".
Ruby belongs to the mineral species corundum. The magnificent color of the ruby comes mainly from a small amount of chromium oxide. The most of these gems come from Mogok, in Birmany. Rubies from Thailand, called the Siam ruby, are more widely used. Corundum The corundum is a very hard gem composed of crystallized alumina and colored by varied metallic oxides. Ruby and Sapphire belong to mineral species corundum. Corundums of other colors are called sapphire too, with the color named, e.g. yellow-sapphire or pink-sapphire. |
